As you will see, Mougins School is on a purpose-built campus backing on to a forest area. All the buildings are clad in wood and the site is landscaped to offer a maximum space for recreational areas catering to the different age groups.

The School has a capacity of 460 students, large enough to provide a stimulating environment and small enough to retain a caring family atmosphere. With thirty-five nationalities the School is culturally rich and its philosophy is designed to encourage pupils to develop morally, emotionally, culturally, intellectually and physically.

The School’s way of life is characterised by caring, tolerance, security, praise and high expectations. We believe that pupils learn best when they are encouraged and valued, trusted and respected. Pupils develop continuously.

Mougins School is unique on the Côte d’Azur. It offers the British curriculum, adapted to an international community. Students leave us with advanced international qualifications accepted throughout the world for University entrance or for direct entry into employment.

The Foundation Stage for 3 to 4 year olds is housed within a purpose built and well-resourced building. Children in the first year (Early Years Class) attend School for mornings only. In the second year (Reception Class) children attend all day.

From Forms 1 to 9 the programme is divided into Key Stages and students follow the UK National Curriculum.

Students in Form 11, having followed a two-year course, take external examinations in at least 8 subjects. The examinations taken are International General Certificates in Education (IGCSE’s) designed for the international market and administered by Examination Boards in the United Kingdom.

After their IGCSE examinations, students who have gained at least 5 A – C grades may enter the Advanced International Programme. In the first of these two years (Form 12) students normally study 4 or 5 subjects to prepare for external AS examinations. In the second year (Year 13) they prepare for external A levels. AS and A level are, once again, administered from the United Kingdom. The subjects studied are chosen from a wide range, giving students the chance to create a course with both breadth and depth.

The overall Results in IGCSE, AS and A level examinations are excellent and well above the national average. This year the pass rate for A level was 97.5%. Students are guided by Senior Tutors when making their university applications and assistance is given in careers guidance. The majority of our students go on the Higher Education throughout the world.

The School Week: Mougins School operates from Monday to Friday. There are no lessons on Saturdays and Sundays. The School starts at 08h45 for Secondary School students and 09h00 for Primary School children. Note also that finishing times vary during the week. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday School finishes at 16h10: Friday School finishes at 15h30 and on Wednesday Primary School finishes at 12h30 and Secondary School finishes at 12h50. Children in Early Years who are at School for half the day begin at 09h00 and finish at 12h00 throughout the week.

The Organisation of the School generally limits class sizes to 22, bearing in mind that numbers can be increased in Forms 12 and 13 where students are split according to subject choice. The School is divided into Primary and Secondary sections although, for administrative purposes, it is a single unit. The School is supervised by the Senior Management Team which comprises the Headmaster, the Deputy Head, the Primary School Co-ordinator and the Director of Studies.

The School Dress code requires students to attend School appropriately dressed but, as in the continental tradition, there is no school uniform.

The School Dining Room provides our students with excellent, freshly cooked lunches every day except Wednesday. We operate a self-service system, with assistance for the youngest students. The airy modern ‘Café des Amis’ and its exterior terrace provide students and staff with a convivial environment in which to relax together.

The School Library is a superb facility which enables students to choose from over 9000 volumes, both for leisure and research, assisted by a dedicated librarian. The Library is open according to school hours and students also have access to computers for research and are able to use the area for study periods and homework. Parents can also take advantage of this service outside School hours.

As well as a strong academic and sporting tradition, Performing Arts play an important part within the curriculum. Music is part of the weekly timetable up to Form 9 and students throughout the School can have private instrumental lessons taught by peripatetic music specialists. The three School Choirs perform both in School and publicly and there are annual Spring and Winter concerts. In the past the School has produced CDs written and performed by the students, the sale of which raised a considerable amount of money for charity. Drama has an equally important place in the School programme with a minimum of two productions a year. Some recent productions include: Chicago, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Inspector Hound, Annie, Once Upon an Island and A Streetcar named Desire.
In September 2007 Mougins School entered into a partnership with the Limelight Theatre. This company promotes British theatre on the Côte d’Azur, inviting renowned actors and directors who ensure that Anglophones can continue to experience high-quality productions. The partnership will allow students to attend workshops with the actors and directors as well as dress rehearsals. Students will be invited to learn about and participate in set design and painting as well as light and sound techniques. There will be technical guidance for School productions, role-play sessions and the possibility for students to be involved both back stage and front of house in Limelight Theatre productions. Limelight will sponsor a prize to reward excellence in technical support and will organize a speech competition.

Sport plays an important part in the curricular programme and the School has excellent sporting facilities: a synthetic football pitch, outdoor games court and superbly equipped competition-sized gymnasium permit the School to offer a wide range of sporting activities. The School is also affiliated to the U.N.S.S., a national sporting organisation for schools in France, playing matches against other schools and competing in major tournaments on a regional and national level.

Apart from Day Trips organised during the course of the School year a number of Residential Visits are organised. Students in Forms 3 – 6 each have an opportunity to participate in either a summer or winter activity which entails going away for 4 – 6 days. In late September Form 7 spends six days on the Iles de Lérins, off Cannes. During the year Form 9 participate in a PGL activity camp and in Form 10 students studying Spanish do a trip to Barcelona, the Geography students do a Field Study Week in the Cevennes (France) and the Physical Education Option do sports activities in the Alpes de Haute Provence.

The Parent Teacher Association plays a very active role within the community. Made up of an enthusiastic group of parents, teachers and student representatives, it has two major roles, that of organising social activities and fund-raising. Social events include regular Coffee Mornings, sometimes theme-based, cultural outings, Spring Fair, Summer Barbecue, Wine Tasting, Culture Club and Names to Faces Picnic. Fund-raising activities have included a 24-hour Trampoline Bounce, Sponsored Walks, Art and Fashion Shows, Car Boot Sale, Children’s Christmas Fair and a Gala Dinner. Funds have been used to purchase a School bus, stage equipment and light and sound system, furnishing of the Art Studio and the School Library. The President is assisted by a dynamic group of men and women. New parents are encouraged to offer their assistance as this is an excellent way in which to make friends.

Students are encouraged to assist in fund-raising activities and will often suggest causes for which they wish to raise money and will organise projects themselves. Assistance has been given to: Guide Dogs for the Blind, Cancer Research, SCAMT (a local charity which supports women and children in Croatia), Comic Relief, the Red Cross and Telethon (research into muscular dystrophy) among others.

The School produces a Newsletter every month in which parents can find a wealth of information to do with the life of the School: social events, school trips, parents’ evenings, musical and theatrical productions and information pertaining to the academic programme. It is possible to place classified advertisements in the Newsletter.

Every year a team of students and staff work on the School Yearbook. This is a hardback book containing a photographic and written record of the School year and every student appears in it. It is a much-appreciated piece of School memorabilia.

The School has a fleet of three School Buses regularly used for day trips, residential courses and sporting activities.
